6-Week Writing Programs   ~  Seacoast Memoir Series

The Writer’s Workshop offers new and emerging writers the opportunity to develop their literary skills in small, collaborative, non-judgmental, workshop-style classes. We foster creative environments where every participant has a story to share and a desire to learn.

The Art of Memoir

“History will be kind to me because I intend to write it.” – Winston Churchill. In this class, held in historic Stoodley’s Tavern (built c. 1761) at Strawbery Banke Museum in Portsmouth, we’ll explore the landscape of your memoir-in-progress or personal essay. We’ll eavesdrop on your characters, follow your narrative path, and seek out your voice. Using simple in-class writing exercises, excerpts from master memoirists, and assignments applicable to your project, we’ll work together, in a supportive environment, to refine your writing skills for future publication.

Instructor:   KM Churchill
Level:   Adult Beginner & Intermediate Writers

“Kathleen has amazing insight that helped me to develop my story. Also, she’s fun and really supportive!”  ~ A. Pondaven, Boston, Massachusetts

The Art of Memoir II

Building on the energy from the first class in this series, Part Two will focus on discovering the underlying meaning of your memoir-in-progress or personal essay. The process will be challenging and, at all times, supportive. You may choose to present a new piece or continue revising a work-in-progress. Through in-depth readings, evocative memory and sensory exercises, lively lectures, and spirited discussions, we’ll work together to uncover the truth of your experience and develop the story arc to express it.

Prerequisite: Registration is open to writers who have participated in Part One of this series or writers I have worked with individually. Writers who do not fit this criteria but would like to participate are encouraged to submit a cover letter and work sample (5 pages) for admission consideration.
